概要
- 汽水域研究センターは、島根大学がわが国最大の汽水湖に隣接しているという特徴をいかし、そこで起こる様々な問題や課題の解決に向けて基礎的な研究を推進するわが国唯一の汽水域研究機関です。1992年に発足して以来、1997年には中海を臨む地に中海分室が附設され、この分室を拠点に、変化に富む汽水環境や個性豊かな汽水生物相の調査研究が学内外の共同研究者とともに精力的に進められています。
- 汽水域は、豊富な魚貝類に恵まれた自然豊かな場所です。そして、生活のなかの親水空間の一部として、我々に安らぎと憩いの場所を提供してくれます。このような汽水域は、海洋や河川の双方から影響を受け、気象条件によっても変化します。さらに人為的な影響が複雑に絡み合っている場所でもあります。汽水域の環境は、自然変動と人間活動が微妙なバランスを保ちながら成立している極めて繊細な水域です。
- 現在、地球温暖化が汽水域環境にも影響を及ぼすなどグローバルな視点で汽水域研究を推進すること、そしてこれまでの開発で劣化した自然を修復し、豊かな自然を再生させるための総合的かつ学際的研究が求められています。ラムサール条約に登録されている宍道湖・中海は、汽水域環境のモニタリングサイトに指定されており、汽水域研究センターはこれら汽水湖の保全のための国際的な貢献にも努めているところです。
- 汽水域研究センターは、基本理念である「人間社会とそれを取り巻く自然環境の持続的発展を可能にするための汽水域の保全と利用」を踏まえ、より明確な研究体制を築くため、2009年からは学内の教員（兼任教員）と共同研究を行う環境を整えました。島根大学における中核的研究施設として、以下のような研究部門のもとに研究・教育を行っています。

- The Research Center for Coastal Lagoon Environments (ReCCLE) was established in 1992 in order to promote basic research aimed at solving environmental and social problems in estuaries and coastal areas. ReCCLE's Nakaumi Field Laboratory, located on an island in the largest brackish-water lake system in Japan, was completed in 1997. Since then, ReCCLE faculty and researchers from around the world have carried out studies of the complex environment and distinctive biota of brackish waters.
- Although coastal lagoons are very important economically because of their wealth of marine food products, they are also important for society as a setting for recreation and relaxation. These water bodies are characterized by the delicate balance between inflowing seawater and river water; they are therefore very vulnerable to both human modification and climate change.
- Gradual change is already occurring in estuaries and coastal lagoons as global warming leads to changes in rainfall patterns and increases in sea-level. Recently ReCCLE and other conservation organizations have been increasingly called on to prevent human-caused deterioration of brackish environments and to restore environments damaged by excessive development of coastal regions. ReCCLE aggressively pursues a program of monitoring to assist in the conservation of brackish Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi, which have been registered with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.
- ReCCLE was reorganized in April 2009 to develop research focused on sustainability, with a stated goal of "Promoting the conservation and wise use of estuaries and coastal lagoons to ensure the sustainable development of both human society and the surrounding natural environment." ReCCLE is a major research institute in Shimane University and its researchers collaborate with a wide range of faculty members from various divisions within the university and around the world. ReCCLE's research program is divided into the following four-part framework:

- Conservation and Restoration Research Division
